Why the MotoGP circuit is a poor investment for AdelaideHistorically, city-based MotoGP circuits have struggled to balance spectacle and economic benefits against significant concerns regarding rider safety, construction and operating costs, community disruption, and the quality of racing. As MotoGP reporter Andrew McLarney observed, "MotoGP has not raced on a street circuit since 1982, and the reason for that was that riders kept dying." While modern safety standards are far superior, the fundamental challenge remains that MotoGP motorcycles travel at speeds exceeding 350 km/h and require extensive runoff areas to protect riders in the event of a crash.Street circuits are inherently constrained by existing roads, buildings, and urban infrastructure. They are typically narrower than purpose-built tracks, offering fewer overtaking opportunities and limiting multiple racing lines. This can reduce the quality of racing and diminish the spectator experience. In contrast, MotoGP's most highly regarded venues, including Phillip Island, Mugello, and Assen, are purpose-built circuits designed to provide flowing layouts, safer run-off areas, and frequent wheel-to-wheel competition.Beyond the racing considerations, the environmental impact of the proposal is concerning. Adelaide's Park Lands are one of the city's defining assets. They contribute significantly to biodiversity, urban amenity, and protection from extreme summer heat. The proposed removal of 377 trees, including mature River Red Gums and other established vegetation, represents a substantial and irreversible loss. While replacement planting may be proposed, mature trees provide environmental and aesthetic benefits that cannot be replicated for decades.Given the safety concerns, uncertain long-term economic benefits, impacts on residents, and the loss of valuable green space, it would be more prudent to invest in upgrading and promoting The Bend Motorsport Park. South Australia already has a world-class motorsport facility capable of hosting major events without sacrificing Adelaide's unique Park Lands or exposing the city to the risks associated with a temporary street circuit. ...
