Indigenous Plants
Discussion
Revegetating urban and rural areas with local plant species can provide habitat for wildlife, offset habitat loss else, and is more likely to be successful because the species planted will be suitable to the local climate and ecosystem.
Cities and Indigenous Plants
Cities are at their best when suffused with trees and other plants, whether in multi-hectare gardens, or along streetside nature strips. Plants provide habitat for other wildlife, and help moderate urban temperature and humidity.
Use of plant species specific to the local region or surrounding region, can help distinguish a city in the eyes of visitors, and provide plants able to thrive in local conditions but without proliferating out of control.
The suburbs of Australian cities often host Australian plants, especially local plants, as well as plants from beyond Australia. However the streets in central city areas often do not host many Australian trees or other species.
