Description
Moving Towards Urban Sustainability is intended for teachers of middle school students, and teachers of secondary school subjects such as Society and Environment, Geography, Sustainable Futures, Contemporary Issues, and Studies of Societies.
The focus of the resource is on the way we live in modern cities, but the content moves beyond this to examine the environmental impacts of house design, transport, electricity, water and waste, It also addresses the role of community, the importance of city gardens, and the opportunities for individual choice and action which can help to reduce the impact of global warming.
Section A introduces the issues relating to the growth of cities and their contribution to global warming and climate change. It also provides some visions of how our cities could be in the future, and uses the Christie Walk housing project in Adelaide as an example of a small scale ecocity.
Section B explores the topics of water, energy, home building design & materials, transport, gardens & biodiversity, food, community, and consumerism.
Each topic has a section demonstrating how Christie Walk is dealing with that particular issue, and a range of activities with suggestions for student action. The actions are ones that students can take to reduce their individual impacts on the environment.
