Joint initiative brings car share service to Adelaide

Urban Ecology Australia (UEA) joined forces with GoGet Car Share in August 2008 to launch a car sharing service in the Adelaide CBD.

The service began with two vehicles located near Christie Walk (just outside the Centre for Urban Ecology) in Sturt Street. It has since grown to embrace more than 100 drivers, and a third vehicle, based at Topham Mall car park, is planned for March. More vehicles are planned for other strategic CBD locations during 2009.

You can drive a new car such as a Toyota Yaris for low membership costs, kilometer and hourly charges, and GoGet pays the petrol.

GoGet Car Share, a Sydney-based company, has around 180 cars in the CBD and fringe areas of Sydney and Melbourne (and affiliated services in Brisbane and Perth).

Car sharing

Car sharing is ideal if you use a car on an occasional basis. It gives you ready access to a network of new cars parked nearby. As a member you have all the benefits of a car without the hassles of owning one. This makes it attractive for small businesses and NGOs as well as households.

If walking, cycling and public transport are your primary modes of travel, there are still some times you may need access to a car. This user-friendly, pay as you go service offers you a real alternative to owning a car.

If you live outside the city you can still take advantage of car sharing - eg catch public transport to the city and then take a car to other destinations.

Commercial car sharing has been operating successfully in Europe and North America for over 30 years. It has boomed in the last 10 years with the advent of web-based booking and management in conjunction with smart card technology.
