Thanasis Avramis

45 years old, of Greek background, Thanasis Avramis, and his wife, Dimitra, have had a long standing interest in urban issues. Dimitra’s interest arose from living in Athens for a number of years and seeing how differently a city can be organised. Thanasis's interest arose in his teens when the prospect arose of a six lane highway being built in their backyard — thanks to the late and unlamented MATS plan.

In the early 80’s was involved in the Hindmarsh Residents Association fighting the evils of planning blight caused by the MATS plan and the Highways Department. Helped set up the Hindmarsh Housing Association, one of the first community based housing cooperatives in South Australia and the first cooperative to build about twenty mud brick homes — with labour contributed by the intending tenants.

Helped set up the Community Housing Assistance Service of SA (CHASSA) which went on to represent the interests of a couple of dozen housing cooperatives (with over 1000 tenants) and was instrumental in advocating for the first Housing Cooperative legislation in South Australia. Much of the initial work in "equity co-ops" or co-ops in which you buy the housing was done by CHASSA.

Has been Involved in a Greek theatre company, Theatro Oneiron. Current President of People for Public Transport — an advocacy group aiming to address solutions to the less than average state of public transport in South Australia. Presently employed as a Manager in Department of Family and Community Services where I have spent the last 20 years setting up child care services around the State.
