Sick Cities Make a Sick Planet
Chérie Hoyle. Urban Ecology Australia. 2007.3
We've heard a lot about "sick buildings", but with global warming we need to talk about "sick cities".
So what sort of questions do you ask to find out if your city is "sick"?
- Does your city have "vanishing creek syndrome"?
- Are its arteries hardened and clogged full of poisonous guided missiles?
- Are its lungs in good health, or are they reduced in size?
- Does it have a steady temperature, or are there "hot spots"?
In an email conversation with Richard Register (founder of the original Urban Ecology movement in the USA) recently, I was talking (ranting?) about changes that need to be made and received this ‘blessing’ from him…
"Blessed be those who confront thinking itself as if it made sense."
